This tool is general information for families and students. It is not a screening or diagnostic tool, does not give individual advice, and is not a substitute for an assessment by a registered speech-language pathologist. If you are worried about your child's communication, Ontario families can self-refer to their local Preschool Speech and Language Program at no cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a word list at home?
Say the word, let your child try, and give a clear model if it is off. Five minutes a day with ten to fifteen words beats a long session once a week. Keep it playful: hide the pictures, make a matching game, or say the word before each turn in a board game.
Which word position should we start with?
Ask the speech-language pathologist if you have one. In general, start with whichever position the child already produces best, often the beginning of words, and move to the others once that is consistent.
What is a carrier phrase?
A short fixed sentence frame like "I see a ___" that lets the child practise the target word inside connected speech without having to think about the rest of the sentence.
